1972 Canadian Figure Skating Pin: Sapporo Via London.

Simplicity of the pin reflects a less complex time in the sport

London, in Ontario, Canada, has seen it all when it comes to major figure skating events, having hosted the Canadian Figure Skating Championships (four times), Skate Canada (twice), the World Junior Figure Skating Championships (once), and the World Figure Skating Championships (once). And in the run-up to the 1972 Olympic Winter Games, the best figure skaters in Canada arrived in London for the 1972 Canadian Figure Skating Championships, marked with a handsome lapel pin that reflects a less complex time in the sport.

Many figure skating pins issued for events are adorned with local or national symbols and designs that capture both time and culture. That is certainly the case with the 1972 Canadians pin, for sitting proudly in the center is the Canadian maple leaf in red, with a pair of skaters superimposed in contrasting white and gray. Split to each side of the maple leaf stem is the year, “1972.” A rich blue background allows the maple leaf and skaters to stand out well.

An outer band in green frames the pin and contains the event name and location: “Canadian Figure Skating Championships London.” The multi-color, enamel pin with generous radius corners is of fine quality to mark what is surely a memorable event in Canadian figure skating history.
