Shield-shaped pin was a welcome change of design for the annual souvenir

So many figure skating pins are round or rectangular that anything different is a refreshing and welcome change. Such is the case with the pins made to commemorate the 1984 Skate Canada event, held in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. A traditional shield shape marks the occasion and stands out as one of the more interesting pins from the annual event.

Pins Gallery: 1984 Skate Canada

In the gallery are two pins from the 1984 Skate Canada event. The first is the main logo pin that was available to the public and the second is a much larger version identical in all aspects other than size and was given only to select individuals, including officials and competitors.

On a gold-colored base metal that cleanly frames the pin, the familiar Skate Canada pictogram sits at the center on a red background that mirrors the shape of the shield. The year and location, in gold, are tucked to the right and below the skater: “’84” and “Victoria.” The skater seems to be balancing just above the left stem of the letter “V” in Victoria. Neatly arranged at the top in the outer white background is the symbol of Canada, a maple leaf in red, that seems to crown “Skate Canada” in gold just below it.

Both pins commemorate a largely unremarkable event, but it was the first time in the 11-year history of Skate Canada that pairs skating was contested. The first winners in the pairs were from the Soviet Union, with Canadian teams taking silver and bronze in Victoria.
